about
This song is dedicated to a great man and a great son Boyd and Daniel Berlind. I wrote this at the end of February. I didn't sit down and say "Hey, I'm gonna write a song about my friends Dad", the song just came to me. As I developed melodies the lyrics just poured out.
That tends to be what always happens when I write my favorite songs. The lyrics really mean a lot more when you aren't thinking about them while writing them.
RIP: Boyd Berlind
lyrics
your leaving your mark while i, find my way
through the dark and through the shame
when i walk upon, i see i don't belong
and suddenly, it all seems so wrong
its like, being born…again
at just seventeen, i saw my dreams
i learned how to adjust, so i could feed my needs
eventually, i will need my sleep
my time alone, my time to weep
and when you go, you will know...
that I will become
more than just your son
more than a man
who once, cost you so much
for me once,
and many times before
you would adjust
and you would always be kind….
father of mine
you wouldn't laugh
when i would cry
the memories hurt
like when i was nine
wish i could breath
like your lungs were mine
the end is near, and i, can see the light
i can feel your fear, through your own eyes
with you almost gone, it is clear
why i should now shed a tear
your will is mine
to execute….today
and when your away
don't forget to say
you were once a great father
you were once a great father
i will get you home
so you can be alone
with all that is yours
and will all become mine
father i will cry
when you are gone
i will have died
you gave me my life
you gave it your all
so i could have
so much to call
its hard to believe
that you could cry
i've never seen
someone i love die
now with you gone
i will leave my pride
i will be always kind
father of mine
